Dr. Yerby’s research examines cybersecurity as an educational, technical, organizational, and public problem. His work is organized around three connected areas: cybersecurity education and workforce development; privacy, surveillance, governance, and public-facing cyber risk; and digital forensics and cyber experimentation. Student collaboration is a recurring part of this work.

Research Areas

Cybersecurity Education and Workforce Development

Examines how students learn cybersecurity and how academic programs connect classroom learning to professional practice. Topics include applied learning, cybersecurity competition teams, immersive computing camps, workforce preparation, and curriculum development.

Privacy, Surveillance, and Technology Governance

Examines how digital technologies affect privacy, accountability, institutions, and public trust. Recent topics include automated license plate readers, age verification, social media privacy, identity assurance, and accountability for increasingly autonomous artificial intelligence systems.

Digital Forensics and Cyber Experimentation

Focuses on authentic investigation and controlled experimentation, including virtualized honeypots, malware analysis, steganography, and learning activities that connect technical evidence with professional judgment.

Student-Inclusive Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate students frequently participate in Dr. Yerby’s research through literature review, data analysis, scholarly writing, presentation, and peer review. Recent projects have developed into peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, graduate thesis research, externally reviewed presentations, and nationally selected research opportunities. Student-authored and co-authored work is submitted through normal professional review channels.
